February 2024 Newsletter

We are pleased to announce that the Centre has formed new partnerships with BASF led by Partner Investigator Dr Colin Cavanagh (Head of Crop Genetics and Biometrics); and Iowa State University led by Partner Investigator Professor Sotirios Archontoulis (Professor of Integrated Cropping Systems). These new partnerships build upon the existing partnerships that the Centre has and will contribute towards research being undertaken with Chief Investigators Mark Cooper and Graeme Hammer on using crop modelling via the Agricultural Production Systems sIMulator (APSIM) to advance plant breeding methods.

APSIM is internationally recognised as a highly advanced platform for modelling and simulation of agricultural systems. It contains a suite of modules that enable the simulation of systems for a diverse range of plant, animal, soil, climate and management interactions. These new partnerships on physiology and breeding will allow us to integrate disciplines and make relevant crop growth model improvements to suit breeding applications.

One of the values of a Centre of Excellence is our ability to facilitate these national and international partnerships to work towards a common goal. Plant Success has set up a Translation and Impact Committee led by Deputy Centre Director Mark Cooper with the purpose of maximising the adoption and impact of the Centre’s research outputs and this includes developing procedures to identify and include new partner organisations.

We would like to thank Mark and Graeme for facilitating these new partnerships and we look forward to updating you about other exciting collaborations that are in development in due course.
